Getting Acquainted With The O2 Xda Atom
My Nokia 3230 Symbian OS went dead. I tried resets of incrementing severity until I finally reached the hard format. It wiped out all of my phone memory contacts but now the phone works. (I lost ~4 years worth of contacts. University buddies reading this, please sms me your numbers.)
In the interim, my mum gave me her spare Nokia N70 as a backup. Then she dug up a O2 Xda Atom for me.
Wow. If only every backup was an incremental upgrade. Anyhow, I had a bit of fun with the Atom today. Take a look!
Since the Atom had Wifi, my first thought was to set up internet radio streams using aacPlus. By minimizing data transfer, we can lengthen battery life and aacPlus gives near CD quality streams at 24kbps!
They are very few PocketPC players that support aacPlus but I managed to find one, Resco Pocket Radio which works very well. The buffers get filled very fast and music plays almost instantly. No buffering delays nor dismal battery life. Perfect for studying at libraries with free Wifi. A worthy alternative to my ultraportable Acer 3012WTMi.

I installed PocketMusic to play streams from Shoutcast and my MP3s.

I wanted to test how well the Atom takes to downloading a larger file. Conclusion? As fast as the connection would allow.

I went on MSN and yes, I installed a SSH client so that I can SSH back home to check on or start new downloads from my Atom. How cool is that?

The awesome file manager GSFinder (freeware!!!) and the shortcuts to Resco Radio, PocketMusicmusic and FM Radio that I will be using very frequently.
If you notice, Opera is also in it. Hehe.

There are other programs like Magic Button (Task Manager) and TodayWarrior (plug-in for the Today screen that allows us to do the most habitual tasks when we are working with WiFi) which are also indispensable.
There are many possibilities with a "mini computer with Wifi capability". When it's time for me to get another phone, I would be keeping my eyes firmly out for one of these again.
